MISSION STATEMENT

Saturday Players is a new troupe of performers, artists, and technicians dedicated to making the theater fun again.

Eliminting physical boundaries between actors and the audience, Saturday Players productions incorporate the audience into the action on stage and encourage spontaneous audience interaction by adding improvisational techniques to the performance of a scripted work.  Our hope is to generate in theater audiences the same feelings of community and enthusiasm found at sporting events.

Response to our approach has been encouraging, and we are earning a reputation as an exciting, up-and-coming presence in New York City's downtown theater scene.  New York Times critic Ben Brantley raves "it's hard not to be caught up in their rambunctious pleasure in the proceedings," and CNN's ShowBiz This Weekend proclaimed, "Who knows?  You could be seeing a preview of Broadways' next big hit."

We focus on three types of productions:

Classical Works -- Mainly the plays of Shakespeare, classical texts are performed in the Elizabethan spirit, where audience participation was encouraged and solicited. These plays are not presented as museum pieces. Rather, by stripping away physical and emotional barriers which exist between modern performers and audiences, we hope to make classical texts accessible and relevant, facilitating a return to the true collaborative spirit of the theatre and showing that heightened language is not, by default, incomprehensible.

Modern Plays -- Through collaborations with new playwrights, Saturday Players creates truly interactive theatrical experiences for new plays or plays previously not produced in New York. Audiences do not sit voyeuristically in the dark, but physically, and therefore emotionally, become involved in the action of the play.

Silly Plays -- Basically, we look for any project which sounds like fun and which fits with our Mission Statement. We have a preference for comedies with substance behind the fluff. Humor is always the best way to connect with an audience. Laughter is a release of tension, so we aim to get the audience laughing then sock them in the gut with the Important Message when they least expect it.

We are always looking for projects which fit with our mission and our philosophy. Contact us if you'd like to work with Saturday Players or propose a project.
